his afternoon, in the 7th inning of a game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado injured his left knee in a freak occurrence. He was running to first base when his foot caught the bag at a weird angle. His left knee buckled and he had to be carted off of the field.
The Orioles started today 4 ½ games out of the final Wild Card spot with 7 games left to play. Machado, 21, is considered a future superstar and made the All-Star team this year. He has played in every game this year and is hitting .282/.313/.431 with an AL leading 51 doubles, 14 HRs and 71 RBI. He is also considered the best fielding third baseman in the AL already, despite this being his first full season in the majors. Machado was the 3rd overall pick in the 2010 draft.
This injury is somewhat reminiscent of the injury of Kevin Ware, and Tim Hudson. In a game against the New York Mets, Hudson fractured his ankle and foot while covering first base on a groundball, when his foot caught the front of the bag right when Eric Young, Jr. was crossing it. Hudson was also carted off and his season was over. He hopes to be fully recovered by spring training. No word yet on how severe Machado’s injury is, but if the worst case scenario is true (torn MCL/ACL, dislocated knee, etc.), Machado may not be available until midway through next season.
