Arizona Cardinals Safety Rashad Johnson Not Sure When He Lost Finger

You think it would be bad enough that the Arizona Cardinals got manhandled by the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. However, the 31-7 loss wasn’t the only painful thing to happen to the Cardinals. Safety Rashad Johnson ended up losing the tip of his left middle finger during the game. Let me repeat that. He lost the tip of a finger during the game. Even worse, he doesn’t even know exactly when that happened.

His best guess is that it happened during a punt return by the Saints Darren Sproles. Johnson didn’t realize it had happened until he removed the glove from his hand. He had to have surgery after the game last night. They did not reattach the tip of the finger. Instead, the doctors had to shave the bone down to the first knuckle. They are still concerned about an infection due to how long it was exposed. My guess is that they will monitor him over the next few days and see if further measures need to be done.

This is a bit reminiscent of Ronnie Lott having the tip of his left pinky amputated at the end of the 1985 season. Lott had the finger crushed during a tackle. He was told that surgery to repair the finger might mean that he’d miss time, so he decided to just have it cut off. No word yet on whether Johnson will play next week or not.
